Hamilton’s Blessing: The Extraordinary Life and Times of Our National Debt: Revised Edition [Paperback]
Our national debt is now so high that most of us have stopped thinking about it, because the prospect of bringing it under control is unimaginable. We consider it a national liability and fear our children will be forced to pay for our current excesses. John Steele Gordon is a welcome antidote. In 1997, his book, Hamilton’s Blessing, offered a “biography” of the debt, making it very much a human drama while explaining the myriad, mostly positive, ways it has influenced America’s history since Alexander Hamilton first proposed the virtues of a national debt in 1792. However, the 12 years since the book’s initial publication have been perhaps the most dramatic in the debt’s history?since it has more than doubled and continues on an ever-upward spiral. Now, more than ever, we need John Steele Gordon’s wisdom?his revised and expanded edition of Hamilton’s Blessing will put this historic expansion in perspective, allowing us to better participate in debate and discussion. Debt-Proof Living: The Complete Guide to Living Financially Free (Debt-Proof Living (Paperback)) [Paperback]
Amazon.com Review
There are plenty of heavily pedigreed personal-finance experts dishing out good advice, but not many who know what it’s like to have to eat ramen all month to make a car payment. On the other hand, there’s Mary Hunt, a recovered credit card addict whose free-spending ways landed her family in the middle of $100,000 of unsecured debt in the early 1980s. Pulling herself out of that morass gave Hunt the courage to strike out on her own as a writer, motivational speaker, and the brains behind The Cheapskate Monthly, a newsletter and Web site (www.cheapsk8.com) dedicated to promoting the art of living within one’s means, a message that grows ever more urgent as the average American family struggles each year to pay $1,200 in interest alone on revolving, unsecured debt. While Hunt’s previous books have echoed some consistent themes–debt bad, saving good–they’ve addressed a hodgepodge of different areas: building financial confidence in wome (more…)

Review
A great program for anyone in debt., June 29, 2004By SherriWow, finally a budget program I can do. My husband and I were both amazed that we could be debt free in seven yrs, house and all, considering we just bought our house less than 2 yrs ago. What I really like is the work sheets that show you there is a light at the end of the tunnel. We have even showed some of our children the program and now they are doing power payments. Easy to follow anyone can do this, July 12, 2004By ErinThis book is great. The software is so simple to use and so straight-forward. I love how breaks everything down for you and even goes through a month by month extra expense. It has us paying everything off in 3 years including our new car. My favorite part of the book is how it clearly states that one spouse cannot do it alone and that it takes both partners to make it work.
